What’s your utmost favourite line or moment in a film?
Oooh, horrible question! Check out the opening ten minutes of Powell/Pressburger’s “A Matter of Life and Death” – fantastic! David Niven falling in love with a radio operator as his Lancaster bomber goes down.
If you could spend a day with a character from any film, who would it be, would you do together and what do you think they’d make of you?
What’s been your most memorable experience working in film? As a director; making the error of taking other people’s suggestions too seriously!
What’s the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given in life?
“It’s nice to be nice,” by my friend and car mechanic, Philip Richards. It sounds and works better with a strong Jamaican accent.
Which 5 people would you invite to your dream dinner party and why?
Alexander the Great, Jane Campion, Norah Ephron, Simone de Beauvoir, Marie Antoinette. I think it would be utter and fantastic chaos. Big egos in the room! I feel sorry for Alexander the Great. He may have conquered the world but he won’t get a word in edgeways – they’ll eat him alive.
Who is the person you most admire either living or dead?
There are many. But Sister Pamela Hussey comes to mind. She has saved a lot of women’s and children’s lives in war torn Central America. And she has done it for decades without any fanfare.
Who is the person you least admire either living or dead?
I don’t waste my time thinking about it.
What’s going to surprise people about your Masterclass?
That they already know most of what I had to show – but they didn’t know that they knew it.

Stephen May has worked as a Hollywood screenwriter, producer, script consultant, actor and director from a young age. As a Mentor and Executive Producer he’s guided hundreds of filmmakers from diverse backgrounds to make the best of themselves and their work. Steve’s workshops aim to bring both the creative industries and the broader community to a better understanding of narrative and how it shapes our sense of self.
