The Creativity Conundrum

By Bonnie Adair
Several years ago, when I used to watch other people’s shows, I was highly critical, with plenty of ideas about how I would have gone about it differently (or as I thought ‘better’). I’d critique the staging, the lighting, the venue, even the acting – everything was fair game! This all changed though, the moment I attempted to put on my first large scale production. After 2 years of planning, fundraising, marketing & eventually casting our first production – we were ready to begin the devising process – and I was almost burnt out already! I realised through that experience, just how much grit & sheer determination it takes to put something on and I had renewed empathy for anyone brave enough to give it a go.
Putting a show on is also one of the most exciting and empowering experiences I’ve ever had. The opportunity to explore a role you’ve always wanted to, the chance to bring a team of creatives together to build your vision & to put your work in front of an audience is incredibly fulfilling & rewarding. So if you haven’t yet had a go, then I wholeheartedly encourage you to seize the moment & start planning your first production, whether it’s a 15min one person play or a three hour immersive epic – do it! You won’t regret it!
Here are my top 3 tips for launching your first production
Start small – pick a play that has just 3 or 4 characters in. It’s easier to work as part of a small team particularly when coordinating diaries for rehearsals.
Utilise contacts – you’d be amazed at who you know & who they know. Sometimes it’s as simple as talking to people around you about your project  and what you need. People are often willing to help if you’re brave enough to ask.
Give back – whenever you’re asking people for a favour, think about what you can offer in return. Money may be tight if your self-producing but what other skills do you have to offer? Everyone likes to know that their times and skills are appreciated.
